The way that your children first hear the message about sexuality will be the foundation for their attitude towards this topic for their entire lives. Unfortunately, human sexuality is not part of the religious education curriculum until 8th grade. By that time, many children have already developed an attitude towards sexuality that is contrary to God's plan. Since the Newtown public schools are teaching human sexuality in 5th grade, we believe it would be beneficial to complement their program with a session for our 5th grade students in religious education on God's plan for human sexuality. We are also offering a parent session to go over the topics that will be covered plus a discussion on how to talk to your children about human sexuality.
The children will be separated into two groups, boys meeting with Mark Renzi and girls meeting with Terri Berthier. The session will begin by explaining that God created our bodies for good, and that He has a wonderful plan for us. There will be open discussion about the anatomy and physiology of the human body and its relationship to God's plan. During an anonymous question and answer period, the children can share their concerns.
Attention parents of Monday students: Students who attend the Monday session of religious education also need a permission slip to attend the human sexuality class. Those not wishing to participate will attend a regular religious education class that day.
Please RSVP if your child will attend and/or if you will attend
the parent session so we can arrange for seating.
