A MESSAGE FROM FATHER BOB

IT’S CARNIVAL WEEK ONCE AGAIN!  It is hard to believe that the Carnival is here once again.  I am sure that the Lord will bless us with success and good weather, so please keep praying for us and for the safety and good health of all who will be volunteering and attending the carnival this week.  Because our carnival falls during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, I am especially grateful to all those who are helping us this year.  I know that many have concerns about the alternative set-up for the carnival due to the construction, but be of good faith and take a look!  I also know that parking will be an issue, especially with the construction for the new Caraluzzi’s Market, but it always seems to work out.  Be safe!  Just a few last minute reminders:

1)      If you are going to volunteer at the Carnival, you need to have taken a Protecting God’s Children class and undergone a background check in accordance with the Diocese of Bridgeport.  Information regarding this requirement is in the weekly bulletin.

2)      IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO DONATE ITEMS WE NEED, especially soda, paper plates, paper napkins, paper towels, condiments, plastic eating utensils and anything else that is on our list!  You can drop them off 24/7 in the vestibule of the church.

3)      RETURN YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS.  This is an integral part of our financial success, and returning your SOLD tickets is a great help to us.  Be sure that you fill out the tickets completely in accordance with State laws.

4)      PRAY FOR GOOD WEATHER FOR US.  The rosaries will be distributed this weekend for your prayers.  As you know, I am a great believer that God will hear our prayers when we are doing His work.

This weekend is the ANNUAL PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION, and as always we ask your generous support.  The theme of this year’s collection is CHRIST OUR HOPE and echoes the Holy Father’s apostolic journey to the United States in April of this year.  The theme reflects the message of Pope Benedict’s encyclical SPE SALVI which is an invitation for people to encounter Jesus Christ personally.  The Holy Father calls us to the hope that will sustain us through the trials of life.  This collection began in the 19th century under the direction of Pope Pius IX and is based on the 9th century “pence collections” that took place in England; the word “pence” refers to the collection of pennies that was taken by the King from the landowners to support the work of the Church during those times.  This has always been a collection used directly for the good works and charities of the Holy Father for the poor and needy of the world.

About this collection…..

The Holy Father can respond with immediate emergency assistance to the most disadvantaged throughout the world, especially those who suffer.

1)      due to war, oppression, famine, disease and natural disaster.

2)      Catholics can stand in solidarity with our Holy Father in fulfilling the mission given to us by Christ to care for the poor.

3)      The Catholics of the United States provide over half of the funds the Holy Father is able to use for his works of charity which is a sign to the world of our care and concern.

PRAY for the Holy Father at whose feet are placed so many requests for assistance for so many of our brothers and sisters throughout the world who are suffering and need help desperately just to live through one day.  Please be as generous as possible to assist in the good works to which Christ calls each of us.

I am sure that you have noticed that our hall is gone.  So many memories are left in the lives of so many people who used the hall for years for events ranging from showers, dance recitals, wedding and baptism celebrations, anniversary parties, school and religious education activities, fundraisers, liturgical services, plays and fellowship gatherings. While the building is gone, those memories will live forever.  Now you have a clear view of the new building which I pray will hold as many memories for all those who will have the opportunity to use it. Please keep our project in your prayers for a timely completion.

PASTORAL PLAN:  Today, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, inaugurates the Year of Saint Paul! This is a special year dedicated by the pope to the greatest missionary of all time! This year will last until June 29 of next year. There has never been a more influential preacher than Paul. He personifies Christian evangelization. This year be sure to pray to him, read his letters, and, above all, follow in his footsteps, continuing to bring the good news to all the Gentiles.

For ideas on how to imitate Saint Paul, check out our Diocesan Pastoral Plan for Evangelization at www.footstepsofchrist.org.

THE PARISH OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY, JULY 4 FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Pam Arsenault, DRE – 426-2333

Purpose in a Name

Names distinguish us from others and they tie us to our ancestors, and they can have meaning that describes who we are called to be.  Peter’s name in Aramaic and in Greek means “rock.”  Jesus saw in Peter what many did not see – he saw the “rock” -- which is hidden within a man who did not show this trait during many times of Jesus’ ministry!  Jesus recognizes that everyone has a purpose within the Kingdom of God – and He calls each of us to that Divine purpose.  There is diversity within the purpose for each of us – and our differences are so good for building up His Kingdom. He sees beyond our human natures, and focuses on the goodness – the divinity within us.

Reflection question:  Do I believe that God knows my name and has a purpose for my life?

Reflection activity:  Ponder this Gospel message (Matthew 16:13-19) and reflect on your goodness -- what is Jesus is saying about your identity as part of the Body of Christ?

*Please note: At all the doors to the Church there are summer calendars (July and August) for activities that will help our children grow in their faith each day.  Summer is a relaxed time for children; they have much more time to reflect on the goodness of God and our response to this goodness!  Please pick up a calendar and post it on your refrigerator for daily use.

Enriching My Catholic IQ:   How many epistles are in the New Testament?  (a) 14; (b) 27; (c) 36; (d) 21

Thank You!

During registration time, 36 people donated for scholarships for those who are unable to pay the fee for Religious Education.  Thank you for reflecting the generous spirit of Christ to those who are in need at this time!

Registration for Religious Education 2008-2009

There are still about 15% of children who are not yet registered for St. Rose Religious Education.  The late fee increases on July 1 because of the resources needed to add additional classes and seek additional catechists to accommodate late registrants and to enter information into the computer database.  There are classes for children who are in Pre-K (4 year olds) until eighth grade.  Grade 1 is a pre-requisite for First Communion classes in grade 2.  Please encourage your neighbors and friends to sign up.  There is also a program called “Journey of Faith for Children” for youngsters who are older than second grade and have not yet received the Sacraments of First Communion or Penance.

7th grade through High School Volunteers

During the summer months, there are opportunities for students to help out in the Religious Education office.  We have a listing of the times and days when we need help.  Too often, we receive calls immediately before Confirmation from students seeking to fulfill their “service requirements” for either Confirmation or High School.  Why not start now in the summer when your schedule may be more relaxed!

Thank You and The Door is Still Open for More Catechists!

Over the last few weeks many people have called and asked to teach the children in the Religious Education Program – thank you.  Since classes are limited to 12 students (because of the need for every child to express their faith), there is a need for 200 catechists!  We are blessed by being present to hear and witness the wonderful ways in which children express their faith – their relationship with Christ.  Henri Nouwen calls this the “reverse mission.”  We are ministering to them; and yet we are blessed through their ministry to us!  God’s ways are so unexpected; it is a miracle to witness the surprises he has waiting for us during every class!   If God is calling you to teach His children, call the Religious Education office today (426-2333)!

Catechist Support Sessions

If you have signed up to teach Religious Education in September, please mark your calendar for the following important dates:

New Catechist Gathering: August 25 at 7:00 in the upstairs room of the Religious Education Office.  This meeting is essential for new catechists; seasoned catechists are also welcome.  Details of the process of religious ed. at St. Rose will be discussed as well as the fundamentals of teaching info. that leads to transformation to the image of Christ (ecclesial methodology – the methods of teaching faith are different than that of teaching English or History!)  Classroom management skills will also be discussed.

Catechist Gathering for all Catechists

On Sept. 6 at 8:00 a.m., we will gather for Mass, followed by Virtus re-certification.  We will have breakfast followed by a general meeting, at which time we will discuss the implications of the theme of catechesis for this year.  This will be followed by grade level meetings, at which time you will meet with fellow catechists of that specific grade level, receive your class list, books, and supplies.   This Meeting is essential for all catechists.

Adult Formation

St. Cyril of Jerusalem School for Adults

The Diocese recently added a summer session called:  Apologetics for the New Evangelization, which will be presented by Mrs. Mary Taylor, O.P., who is a St. Rose parishioner.  This will take place on July 19 and 26 from 9:00-12:30 at the Catholic Center in Bpt.  It will be recorded for online courses.  To register contact saintcyril@diobpt.org.

Education Parish Service (EPS)

There is another Adult Formation Program that is offering summer classes.  Although the program is based in Washington, DC, they have a satellite branch in Norwalk, CT.    Please call the religious education office for more information about this program (426-2333) or visit them online at eps.trinitydc.edu.

Catholics Coming Home

Perhaps you are just coming back to the practice of your faith, and you desire to learn more about what happened in the Church “Since you were gone.”  On Sunday June 29 you are welcome to reconnect and return to the practice of your faith in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.  The meetings will begin on Sunday evenings from 7:00-8:00 in the Religious Education Building at 38 Church Hill Road.  The topic on June 29 is “Reconciliation.” Please call 426-2333 for more information.

Answer to Catholic IQ:  (d) There are 21 epistles, which are in the form of general letters to people and groups of people.  Fourteen of the epistles were written by St. Paul and they are named after the people he was addressing; the remaining seven letters are by the name of the author – for example 1 Peter and 2 Peter.  Today we celebrate the lives of St. Paul and St. Peter.

Jubilee Year Dedicated to Saint Paul

The Pope has announced the Year of St. Paul from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009, which marks the approximate 2,000-year anniversary of the saint’s birth.  Catholics are urged to study St. Paul’s life and his writings.  You may want to begin with reading and pondering his epistles in the Bible – a good starting point for anyone!  It is good to read with a Biblical commentary or from a study Bible to receive additional information about the history and literary style of the text.  Ask the Lord to lead you in ways that you may imitate his missionary energy and spirit of sacrifice in your life.  Start with inviting someone back to the Church!  Catholics Coming Home meets Sunday evening (June 29) at 7:00 at the Religious Ed. Office at 38 Church Hill Rd. (white house).  Fr. Bob will be speaking about the spirit and Sacrament of Reconciliation.

This week we celebrate: St. Peter & St. Paul (June 29), First Holy Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church (June 30), Blessed Junipero Serra (July 1), St. Thomas the Apostle (July 3), St. Elizabeth of Portugal (July 4), and St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria (July 5).

We are grateful for our country’s independence, which will be celebrated this fourth of July!  It is a blessing and a responsibility.

PASTORAL OUTREACH

The Outreach Ministry Office is seeking your help in identifying those parishioners who are home-bound or in Nursing Homes, and those recuperating from surgery or serious illness and cannot come to church but would like to receive Holy Communion or a visit.  Also, many times a parishioner is in the hospital and we at St. Rose are unaware of this.  Weekly visits are made to parishioners in Danbury Hospital who list themselves during their admission process as St. Rose parishioners.  Parishioners in other hospitals can be visited if a family member calls the parish and requests a visit.  If you have a family member in any of the above situations and would like someone to visit, please call Sister Mary Ellen at the Outreach Office 426-2572, ext. 11.  If Sister is out visiting parishioners, please leave a voice message and she will get back to you.

HEALTH TIP:

Gaining Weight for No Reason?  You’re eating right and working out, yet your pants keep getting tighter.  What’s the deal?  Could be your thyroid.  A sluggish thyroid—even one that is just a tad slow—can cause you to pack on the pounds.  As much as 2% of the U.S. population may have an underactive thyroid—called hypothyroidism.  Women over 40 are at highest risk, but anyone can have it.  And it matters, because your thyroid—the tiny gland right below your Adam’s apple, produces hormones that control your metabolism.  Too-low levels slow down everything, so your body burns fewer calories.  If your thyroid tests fine, try these tips for battling the bulge or getting over a weight loss plateau: Revisit how many calories you really need.  It changes with age and activity level.  Double-check your idea of a normal portion size.  Get the skinny on your favorite foods.  Are you exercising enough?

ST ROSE EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN

The Newtown Fire Marshal is concerned about the health and safety of our parishioners while we are worshipping together in church.  Though unlikely, the Marshal makes the point that a violent storm could create an emergency situation during a Mass and he would like us all to be aware and prepared.  Notice the location of all church exits.  Should an emergency occur please calmly proceed to the nearest exit.  Over-reaction many times causes more injuries in a crowded situation than the event itself.  So please exit in an orderly manner.  At all masses please find a seat toward the middle of the pews so that people are not compelled to stand in the aisles or out in the front vestibule.

Parking – Emergency vehicles must have access to the church building.  Please do not park next to the rectory or on the road along the side of the church between the rectory and the rear parking lot.  Remember there is additional parking at 52 Church Hill Road.

The Fire Marshal is interested in our safety.  Please try to respectfully practice these simple procedures.
